Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year! We believe in you!
In Pitt County, North Carolina, there are three APE teachers that provide both direct and consultative services to students with special needs within the public school system. Currently, we serve over 300 students in 29 schools within the county. We travel to 4 or 5 different schools per day, and work with students with various and sometimes multiple disabilities such as visual and hearing impairment, Cerebral palsy, Autism, Down syndrome, Muscular dystrophy, etc. Our goal is to provide all students with special needs, regardless of their disability, the opportunity to participate in meaningful and appropriate physical education, in their least restrictive environment.
"You cannot be all things to all people. Be unique. Be different. Give to others what you want yourself. And do what you were made to do."
"The great aim of education is not knowledge but action."

- Herbert Spencer

Our goal is to provide students the opportunity to participate in aquatic activities related, but not limited, to: physical, emotional, cognitive, and leisure skill development, water safety, basic swim skills, increasing social interaction, and
Special Olympics participation.  Since it's origination in the fall of 2014, over 125 students with special needs have participated in the program, and the results have been astounding!
